Snowshoeing

Last weekend, we took the dogs Snowshoeing and had an incredible day. It was sunny, there was a tonne of fresh snow, and the views of the ocean below and coast mountains across the water were incredible. After a couple of hours of bouncing in the snow, Stella, Kayla and Peppy were exhausted.

Keep in mind that there are several hazards to watch out for while snowshoeing. If you are inexperienced in backcountry travel, stick to the main paths and don't venture too far into the wilderness. There are plenty of trails and logging roads to follow without heading off the beaten path. Let your poochies have fun but also keep then under control. If you can't depend on an instant recall or if you dog tends to wander off, you might want to leash your dog. Tree wells can be 5+ meters deep. If you or your dog falls in one, you may not find him or you might fall in trying to help. Avalanches are always a serious hazard. Keep to the paths, stay off steep slopes, and be very careful.

Valhalla Pure Outfitters on 5th Street in Courtenay (334-3963) rents snowshoes very affordably. There's a good chance that they will have a pair for you if you drop in (Mon-Sun) but it might be a good idea to call ahead and reserve a pair.

You will enjoy snowshoeing with your dogs as much as we did. Try something new!
