There are
many options for places to bring your dog in the Comox Valley.
A short trip to the rural areas of the Valley offer us many options
to let our dogs run free in trails, on fields or on beaches. Please
keep in mind that it takes very little to revoke these leashing-optional
privileges. As the population in the area grows and more people
start to visit or favourite spots, more people will complain about
unruly dogs. One dog that ignores his owners recall, charges a
family, and knocks down a child could be enough to revoke leashing-optional
privileges for everyone.
Even in leashing
optional areas, a family should be able to enjoy themselves without
being bothered by someone else's dog. Our dogs are ALWAYS under
control and we continuously test them to make sure that even in
the middle of playtime on the beach, we can drop them into a "down"
or recall them in an instant. Because of this control, we are
continuously complemented on how well-behaved our dogs are. Knowing
that we can depend on our dogs to listen, we can confidently give
them the freedom to run and play without worrying that they might
bother someone, disturb wildlife, or not come back. This allows
the dogs to have more fun and makes the trip more relaxing for
us.
Furthermore,
please pick up your dog's droppings WHEREVER your are. I am constantly
appalled at the number of people who leave mess behind, even in
the parks within the city boundaries.
My intent
is not to nag, but to keep the Valley's many options for dog-friendly
activities open to everyone. As active advocates of responsible
dog ownership, we set an example for everyone. We prove to those
who dislike dogs in their space that the company of a well-behaved
dog is a pleasure; and we prove to those with unruly dogs that
it isn't as difficult as one might think to gain control.
